Accessibility Services

There are a number of options available in the UK to help disabled people financially and practically. Before you can apply for these accessibility services your needs will be assessed by an occupational therapist on behalf of your local social services, who will then inform you of the best types of home adaptation or home help for you.

Financial help is available through your local council or a disability charity and it can take a number of forms, the most common being direct payment grants and here we outline how you can apply for these and what you can buy with them.

In general, you can claim for a direct payment grant if you, or someone living in your property, is disabled and:

you, or the person on whose behalf you are applying, are either the owner or tenant of the property

you can certify that you, or the person on whose behalf you are applying, intend to occupy the property as your/their only or main residence throughout the grant period (which is currently five years).

The amount of money you will receive differs between regions and is determined by your income and your accessibility needs. But once you have received a grant, you can use the money for essential adaptations and facilities to give yourself more independence at home.

Disability equipment you might find useful at home includes stairlifts, chairlifts and walking frames, while you may also want to use the grant to pay for changes to your home, such as the installing of ramps and widening of the doors.

If you are stuggling to cope at home, even with these adaptations and disability equipment, then you may benefit from practical help from your local social services department. There are many different forms of home help in the UK, such as meals-on-wheels, help with housework and shopping, access to day care facilities, and transportation. To be eligible for home help you need to meet certain qualifying criteria and in some cases there may be a small charge for the help you receive.
